PTFE

PTFE is an abreviation for PolyTetraFlouroEthylene, which is a fluorocarbon-based polymer. A more well known brand name is Teflon™, manufactured by DuPont. This fluoroplastic family offers high chemical resistance, low and high temperature capability, resistance to weathering, low friction, electrical and thermal insulation, and is probably most well known for it’s  “slipperiness”. It’s coefficient of friction is generally .06-.1. What this means in the real world is that it is about as slippery as wet ice.

PTFE’s mechanical properties are low compared to other plastics, but its properties remain at a useful level over a wide temperature range of of -100°F to +400°F. It has excellent thermal and electrical insulation properties.
